**Review Disclaimer - I am the lead singer of the band "Walk of Shame" and the band recently played a show at Cafe 210**When I first thought about playing at State College, Cafe 210 was one of the three bars that I circled on my list to really work on to get Walk of Shame in there. The bar has an amazing reputation as one of, if not the premier live music venue in State College.Let me ramble on here a bit: Barsmart is based out of Pittsburgh, PA, which has a VASTLY different attitude on live entertainment. State College has ALWAYS embraced live bands, and quite frankly does it better than any other college town that I've played in. Walk of Shame has played at just about every college within 150 miles of Pittsburgh. The venue has one of the nicest patios in State College, and when the weather is nice, it's usually filled with PSU's "beautiful people". The drink prices are standard college-bar - Cheap beer (Miller and Coors) pitchers around $5.50 each, Jagerbombs were only 4 bucks, Bacardi pitchers were $6 bucks.Just about every bar at PSU charges a cover, so it's never an issue. We've played at schools where patrons seriously complain about paying a 3 dollar cover. As such, bar owners then get uneasy about charging one. I'd say for insane drink specials and consistently good entertainment - both of which Cafe 210 provides, it's a no brainer.Bathrooms weren't great, but it's a college bar at the heart of it all, so the expectations weren't high. Great ambiance with all of the "bar tour" graffiti on the walls make you realize the history that Cafe 210 has. Great pictures of other great bands that have played at Cafe 210 are on the walls. The food was pretty good - I had a Philly Cheesesteak (which they actually offered the right way, "wit" and all) which was solid. We had a pretty good show there. The fine folks from Barsmart.com were in the house, and had some awesome beer koozie's to pass out to the crowd. They went through 200 of them in about 30 minutes. The energy never really left during the night - the crowd was easy to work, very receptive and interactive with the music, and partied right.Like I said - you've got three bars up there that as someone who has live entertainment at the top of my agenda have to be checked out: Cafe 210, The Saloon, and The Skeller. The Skeller is a dungeon, and Cafe 210 offers a great stage, amazing in-house sound, and a great environment to party.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

In State College this weekend? Stop by Kildare's this Saturday Nov. 20th at for the debute of Walk of Shame. When you hear "Walk of Shame", you might have a lot of different thoughts. Maybe it was that mixer that you don't quite remember. Maybe it was that long "Stride of pride" back to your dorm across A-walk in last night's formal dress. Maybe it's that great story that you get to tell every time your friends get together. To us, Walk of Shame means nothing but the best party rock!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

State College is like a home away from home for many students -- with familiar campus landmarks and downtown stores welcoming them back for a new semester. But like all towns, State College has evolved, with some businesses closing doors and others opening shop.Students looking for new shopping destinations should begin their search on Calder Way, where three new stores opened over the summer. One of those is State College's newest convenience store -- Calder Convenience, 213 E. Calder Way. The owners of the store find themselves in an already thriving market, with Penn State students often on the lookout for a cheaper cup of coffee or bag of chips.Read the rest.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The rathskeller isn't exactly my scene but if you wanna go somewhere that there is some penn state history, i would go to the rathskeller. Its sort of in a basement and it is huge. There are different areas in the bar. When you first walk in there is a bar and some tables. Then there are some bathrooms and pool tables while in the back has a stage with room to dance and a band usually. The drink specials are very good and the drinks are good. I would suggest going there just to say you have been there---and who knows you might love it!!!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The deli--- is the resturant of the Zbar. It has absolutely delicious food. They have potato skins to die for! I love the dinners and the waitress staff is usually pretty good. A few times I had to wait a long time for service but it eventually happened. The long island iced tea pitchers are a great deal and are very strong. The Zbar has a great happy hour. The deals are incredible. They have the best daquiris that I have ever tested (frozen that is!). I would highly suggest going there if your looking for a great dinner and some drinks!!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The Autoport is another excellent location in State College where you can enjoy both a full bar and the sitdown meal with friends.I prefer beers to mixed drinks myself, and they have an excellent selection Try the Late Harvest that is on tap right now. (If you read my reviews I like flavorful beers). There is both inside and outside seating available with plenty of space. With a happy hour that ends at 7 and rotating half price food specials all day it is a great place to meet up for both social and business event. Try both their signature burgers and pizza you can't go wrong.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Cafe 210 is awesome. The front patio of the Cafe is the best place to sit outside for drinks in State College and the first part of the place to fill up in nice weather. The Cafe seemed to big a huge hit last weekend since the weather was so nice. I am hoping the weather stays nice all week so I can sit out on the porch and have some more the their infamous Long Island Iced Teas.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Pickle's is a great bar if you like beer. During Syllabus week me and my roommates would stop at this bar on our way home from class and try a couple different beers each day. This bar is great when the weather is nice because they will open the place up and it look really cool.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The Skeller is my favorite bar around and has been around forever. Last saturday (8/28) was the best night I have ever had at the skeller and the band was awesome. The bartenders were very quick at making drinks and made them with just the right amount of alcohol. The food there is also very delicious and would recommend it. I look forward to another great weekend at the Skeller on Saturday during the Football game.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Mad Mex is one of the top bars in State College because it has a great atmosphere, good drink specials and the best food. If you haven't been there yet I would recommend it. They have a nice bar and restaurant seating inside as well as tables outside on nice days. It could get a little pricey but the drinks actually have liquor in them and the food is much better than at other bars in the area. Monday is their best night, $5 all you can eat burritos and $5 big azz margaritas.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

This place is always a good time. I have never had a bad experience here and they have a HUUUUUUUUGE selection of beers. This place reminds me of a ski lodge in the middle of state college. Wood everywhere and they share a kitchen with the restaurants infront and below so you know the food is good. This place is fun to grab a table and hang out with old friends or make some new ones. Table are hard to come by and this place is always filled by 11pm. They have a country night which changes things up. Otherwise they have a dj up top or just your standard bar atmosphere the other nights. Its a place you will stop by if you come to State College for the weekend. I reccommend it for anyone. There is always a good mix of ppl there and like I said you will have fun if you go.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Good specials, but dirty bar. The dance floor is extremely small and they have their usual crowd. There are a lot of seats and the staff is extremely nice but the place is small. It is up some stairs. I went there one time and there was like an inch of drink on the dance floor make my shoes went and the bottom of my pants. They also have good shots. I don't really like the place due to the small space and the usual crowd but the shots/drinks are very good and very cheap. If you go to PSU, you will most likely end up at the Gaff at least one time! I usually try to tell people not to go there.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Indigo! It is the place to be. It is the best club in State College. Get there EARLY. There is always a very long time. The specials there are amazing. 2.00 drinks and a 3.00 cover. Before 10, free cover. The music is amazing, the dance floor is always full, and the bar is so much fun. Its a place to go for birthdays, a night out, and a lot of fun. I have never had a bad experience at Indigo. The waitresses work hard but its easier to go to the bar yourself....they are always busy with the tables. If you are looking for a lot of people, a club, hit music, and a great night-- go to indigo... but remember go there early!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

This is more of a resturant and late night hang out or light evening. Lots of beers on tap, lots of televisions, interesting and delicious food. More expensive than downtown bars. Must be responsible to frequent the place because it is not near anything and you will be driving home. The Ale House has a much more grownup atmosphere and is a nice change from anywhere downtown. The piano room is very cozy and different from any live music venue in State College. I would recommmend this place for people that are looking for a nice evening out and not looking to get trashed, unless if you live down the room at Toftress or Coppers Pond. I have loved this place ever since my first time there but it is an aquired taste. If you are an adventurous eater and like to try new brews like apricot wheat beer and oyster nachos this is the place for you. Its the only place you can get an awesome bison burger and a fresh seafood bar in the area. I would say take a date or your parents to this spot unless you are like me and enjoy a nice quite evening once and awhile. Really great place to watch game if you don't mind spending a few extra dollars to not be packed into a downtown bar. They also have lots of outside seating and the staff is very helpful and accommodating. I would say try it once and you will be hooked or you won't go back.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The inferno is by far my favorite spot in State College. The food is good during the resturant hours and the bar feels like a "real bar." The prices are a bit higher than everywhere else but not during happy hour. They have really interesting mixed drinks, bottle service, and a good mix of top shelf liquor. IF YOU GO YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE HAND DRYERS. Don't ask. Blue moon is always on special if you like that. They started having a small outdoor seating are which is nice, but all the windows swing fully open so just grab a seat by the front if you want some fresh air. They started having dj's on weekends which is different. The place has more of a downtown city vibe than most of the college bars with plywood floors around here. If you are looking for good drinks and good atmosphere and you are not hung up on price this is the place for you. Good for a date or just a night out with friends, but if you close the place the lights wil get turned on at 2:15... not much leway on that one.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

If you are outside with your friends, the bar rates probably a 6 or 7. If you are inside, shoulder to shoulder (the place gets packed inside) it is about a 2. It's cheap (that can be good right?). If you like long island iced teas, they pour the biggest and you can't beat cheap draft night. GET THERE EARLY!!!!! Overall, beer selection is decent and much cheaper than most places. They usually pour smirnoff---so if you like smirnoff and all the flavors-- you will be set. Bartenders are fine but getting in is intense, walk in...show your id...and say cheese because you are going to be on camera baby. Hate it or love it, they are always packed... if you are in state college--- you'll be visiting the den...
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Easily one of the best bars in State College on a nice day. They have outdoor areas in the front and back with plenty of seating or standing room. They have a huge stage with a lot of room for dancing/sitting around watching the bands. The back is more fun and the front has more televisions for games or eating. The place is always packed on nice nights. The food is great espcially the 5.00 clems bbq deal. The staff is friendly. All around good place. Open all the time basically. Line can get a little long but worth the wait.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The best part about the GMAN, it is huge inside. They have so many seats and two bars with a good staff. They also have an outdoor seating area and large television screens. One of the best parts about the GMAN is trivia night. Its a lot of fun and it gets packed inside. The drinks are very good...especially the hurricanes. It may not be the most fun if you are more into a club scene. However, for lunch or dinner-- it is a great place to hang out... and play trivia!!!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Mad mex is always a fun time right off the bat. Good place to start the evening, eat some dinner, and hang out or to end the evening with tequila shots or some of their other mexican novelties. The place has a good theme to it and is an outside seating favorite. The margaritas are huge as long as you like premixed arizona brand. They have great specials on the margaritas and they put a lot of tequila in them. Great selection of mexican and other beers. Just go there, you will have fun---promise.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The Rathskeller is a bar in State College with a different atmosphere. The bar is full of history and is a great time to listen to local bands. One band in particular that frequents here is Table Ten. I would recommend going here on any week night to enjoy a drink or two with your friends.

797 is pretty new to the state college downtown life scene. I would probably rate them around a 4. I would say that they don't have their identity figured out quite yet. By this I mean, they claim to be a sports bar yet have a stage and a dance floor with djs and music and not many tvs. Where there are tv's there are not many seats. Since they play the music so loud, if there is a sports game on television you can't even hear it. The only good thing about it is there is usually never a line. For the prices they charge for the drinks(way more than other bars in state college), i'd like to see the alcohol come out of the bottle. I once paid 11.00 for a pitcher of "captain" and gingerale out of the mystery gun. Let's just say the captain was lacking. If you like bar food though, the sliders with the curly fries are delicious. So it is okay to go sit outside and grab a bite to eat before going to a real enjoyable bar for the evening.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Mad Mex is one of my favorite places in State College. They open at 11am which is great for lunch or a bar tour. Also, they have great specials on food and drinks throughout the week. I like to go on Monday nights because at 9pm the Big Azz margaritas are only $4. My favorite flavor is mango, but you have to be careful because they are pretty strong. I'm not sure what other nights they do this, but on Friday nights starting at 9pm, food is half off. I prefer the BBQ Los Wingos Wrap. Their portions are enormous so even when I don't go during a special it's never a disappointment. Service can be a little slow, especially if you're sitting outside in the patio, but they do have a full bar out there.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

I was last in State College for Arts Fest the weekend of July 10, and of course I had to go to Cafe 210 West. I got to the bar around 10am with 15 friends. I love Cafe because it is so large and can accommodate a group that size. There is a covered porch out front that faces College Ave., three separate areas inside including a seating area, the bar, and a room with a stage, and out back there is a deck and a lower seating area with another bar. Service was very fast even though the place was packed. My group sat on the front porch where you can smoke and they do not mind if you rearrange the tables. I strongly recommend the skillet fries and peach long island iced teas.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Zola is an excellent wine bar and higher-end dining establishment, which sets it out from the current bar fair in State College. I have attended several events here, and can say that the quality of the food and drinks is consistent and will not disappoint. The lighting is low in intimate making it a quality choice for a special occasion. This location may not be a good daily bar choice for a college student on a budget, but if you value the quality and atmosphere it is an excellent location for relax after a busy day at work or even do some after hours business.Their upscale services make them an excellent choice for wine tastings and business affairs.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Rotelli is an excellent place to have an afternoon conversation, watch the hockey game, or have dinner. A great pizza and Italian menu compliments a well-travelled selection of foreign and domestic beer, wine, and mixed drinks. This location is reasonable priced, and offers a superb wait staff, and management team. Several seating choices are available, the upstairs restaurant, a separate downstairs bar area with live bands and large screen TV, and open-air deck.
Read more of this story at Barsmart
